Capitol Robotics Works Brings Automation to Madison's Factory Floors

Elena Kowalczyk spends much of her week walking factory floors across southern Wisconsin, watching robotic arms she helped install perform tasks that once required a rotating crew of manual laborers, tasks like packaging, palletizing, and precision welding. As founder and chief executive of Capitol Robotics Works, a Madison-based robotics integration firm, Kowalczyk has spent the past nine years helping mid-sized manufacturers automate portions of their production lines, a business she insists is about protecting Wisconsin manufacturing jobs rather than replacing them.

Kowalczyk trained as a mechanical engineer, working for an industrial automation company in Illinois before relocating to Madison in 2016 to start her own firm. She had grown frustrated watching large automation integrators focus almost exclusively on major manufacturers with the budgets to afford enterprise-scale robotics projects, leaving mid-sized Wisconsin manufacturers, the companies she believed needed automation most to remain competitive, without accessible options. Capitol Robotics Works was built specifically to serve that overlooked middle tier of the manufacturing market.

Making the Case for Automation to Skeptical Owners

Kowalczyk's early sales pitches often ran into a predictable obstacle: manufacturing owners worried that automating even a portion of their production line would require large layoffs, a politically and emotionally fraught prospect in communities where the factory is often among the largest local employers. Kowalczyk built her sales approach around a different framing, showing clients data suggesting that targeted automation of the most repetitive or physically strenuous tasks let existing workers shift into higher-skilled roles overseeing and maintaining the new equipment, rather than losing their jobs outright.

That pitch found traction with a Waukesha metal fabricator facing a persistent inability to fill physically demanding entry-level positions, even amid otherwise strong local employment. Capitol Robotics Works automated the company's most injury-prone material handling tasks, and Kowalczyk has cited the project, which the client credits with reducing workplace injuries while allowing the company to redeploy staff to quality control roles, as a template for how she pitches automation to skeptical manufacturing owners.

Growing Alongside Wisconsin's Manufacturing Base

Capitol Robotics Works now employs 34 people, including mechanical and software engineers who design and program custom robotic systems tailored to each client's production line, rather than selling off-the-shelf automation packages. Kowalczyk has resisted pressure from investors to standardize the company's offerings into a more easily scaled product, arguing that the customization is precisely what smaller manufacturers need and cannot get from larger automation vendors focused on bigger accounts.

Addressing the Skills Gap

As automation adoption grows across Wisconsin manufacturing, Kowalczyk has become vocal about the shortage of workers trained to maintain and program robotic systems, a gap she argues could undermine the entire industry's competitiveness if left unaddressed. Capitol Robotics Works has partnered with Madison College to help develop a robotics maintenance certificate program, and Kowalczyk regularly guest lectures to students considering careers in industrial automation.

A Long-Term Bet on Wisconsin Manufacturing

Kowalczyk has turned down at least two acquisition offers from larger national automation integrators, wary that a sale would push Capitol Robotics Works toward larger, more standardized accounts and away from the mid-sized Wisconsin manufacturers she built the company to serve. "I didn't start this to help ten huge companies automate faster," she said, standing on a factory floor as a robotic arm cycled through a welding sequence behind her. "I started it to help two hundred mid-sized ones survive."
