A new advanced MRI suite is now operating at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, part of the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network, giving radiologists sharper images and cutting scan times for many common procedures. Hospital officials say the upgrade is expected to ease scheduling backlogs that have made some patients wait weeks for non-urgent imaging appointments.

The new equipment uses a wider bore design that improves comfort for patients who struggle with the enclosed feeling of traditional MRI machines, along with software upgrades that reduce the time needed for many scans by roughly a third. For patients undergoing imaging for suspected cardiac issues or certain neurological conditions, faster scans can also mean less time holding still, which improves image quality and reduces the odds of a scan needing to be repeated.

Cutting Wait Times for a Growing Patient Population

Demand for advanced imaging has grown steadily across Wisconsin's largest health systems, driven in part by an aging population and increased use of imaging in early cancer detection protocols. A radiology department leader at Froedtert said scheduling backlogs had become a persistent frustration for both patients and referring physicians in recent years.

"We were seeing patients wait three to four weeks for non-urgent scans, which isn't ideal when a physician is trying to confirm or rule out a diagnosis," the department leader said. "The additional capacity from this suite should meaningfully shorten that window."

Faster scan times also allow the imaging department to fit more patients into each day's schedule without extending operating hours, a practical benefit hospital administrators say helps control costs while still expanding effective capacity.

Improved Imaging for Complex Cases

Beyond speed, the new suite's imaging quality is expected to benefit patients with complex or ambiguous cases, where subtle details can significantly change a treatment plan. Radiologists say the higher resolution can help distinguish between benign and concerning findings more confidently, potentially reducing the number of follow-up scans or biopsies needed to reach a diagnosis.

The equipment is also being used in ongoing research collaborations between Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, where investigators are studying imaging biomarkers for conditions including early-stage Alzheimer's disease and certain musculoskeletal injuries common among athletes.

Training and Workflow Adjustments

Rolling out advanced imaging technology requires more than installing new hardware. Technologists and radiologists at Froedtert underwent several weeks of specialized training before the suite became fully operational, learning updated protocols designed to take full advantage of the equipment's capabilities.

A lead MRI technologist involved in the transition said the learning curve was significant but worthwhile. "There's a real difference in how you approach positioning and sequencing with this system," she said. "Once the team got comfortable with the new workflow, we started seeing the efficiency gains we'd hoped for."

A Broader Investment in Diagnostic Capacity

The MRI suite is part of a larger pattern of diagnostic imaging investment among Wisconsin's academic medical centers, as health systems compete to reduce wait times and offer patients access to the newest available technology without requiring travel out of state. Hospital officials describe the investment as central to the health system's broader strategy of consolidating complex diagnostic and treatment capabilities within Wisconsin, reducing the need for patients to seek certain services at out-of-state academic centers.

For patients awaiting answers about a troubling symptom, the practical impact may be the simplest measure of success: a shorter wait between the day a scan is ordered and the day a diagnosis, and a treatment plan, can begin.
