Ironhide Precision Works Turns Milwaukee Scrap Into Aerospace-Grade Parts

On the near south side of Milwaukee, inside a converted tannery building that once smelled of hides and lime, a different kind of precision now hums through the air. Ironhide Precision Works occupies three floors of the old brick structure, where five-axis CNC lathes carve aluminum and titanium into shapes measured in ten-thousandths of an inch. The company's founder, Marcus Whitfield, still walks the floor every morning before the first shift clocks in, running a thumb along freshly milled parts the way his father once checked the edge of a saw blade.

Whitfield did not grow up dreaming of running a machine shop. He apprenticed at a now-shuttered valve manufacturer on Milwaukee's south side in his early twenties, learning to read blueprints by lamplight after his shift ended. When that plant closed in the early 2000s, he took a severance check, a handful of secondhand machines, and a folding table, and started taking on small jobs for local fabricators. Two decades later, Ironhide Precision Works employs 74 people and machines flight-critical brackets, housings, and fittings for aerospace and defense primes headquartered far outside Wisconsin.

From Job Shop to Aerospace Supplier

The turning point came in 2014, when Whitfield invested in his first five-axis machining center, a decision he has called "the loan that kept me up at night for two years." The upgrade let Ironhide bid on work requiring AS9100 aerospace certification, a rigorous quality standard that most small Milwaukee shops could not justify pursuing. Whitfield brought in a quality manager from a Waukesha supplier and spent eighteen months rebuilding the company's documentation and inspection processes before earning the certification in 2016.

That certification opened doors. Ironhide now supplies landing gear components, hydraulic housings, and structural brackets to three tiers of aerospace subcontractors, work that Whitfield says pays better and demands more consistency than the automotive and general industrial jobs that once filled the shop's order book. "In automotive, a scratched part might get flagged in final inspection," Whitfield said in a recent walkthrough of the facility. "In aerospace, a part that's off by three-thousandths doesn't go on a plane. It goes in a bin, and you eat the cost."

Betting on Milwaukee's Machinist Pipeline

Whitfield has become an outspoken advocate for the region's technical college system, hiring more than a dozen graduates of Milwaukee Area Technical College's machine tool program over the past five years. He pays tuition reimbursement for employees pursuing CNC programming certificates and has hosted shop tours for high school students skeptical that manufacturing careers still exist in the city. "Kids think all the factories left in the eighties," he said. "I tell them to come look at what's running in this building right now."

The company's growth has not come without strain. Whitfield has twice turned down expansion capital from private equity firms interested in rolling Ironhide into a larger manufacturing platform, worried that outside ownership would push the shop toward higher volumes and looser tolerances than its aerospace customers require. Instead, he financed a 2023 building expansion through a regional bank and a state manufacturing modernization grant, adding 12,000 square feet of floor space and four new machining centers.

Looking Toward a Second Generation

Whitfield's daughter, who studied mechanical engineering at UW-Milwaukee, now oversees the company's programming department, and Whitfield has begun quietly discussing succession with his leadership team, though he insists retirement is "not on the horizon." For now, he remains focused on diversifying Ironhide's customer base beyond aerospace, recently landing a contract to machine components for a Wisconsin-based clean energy manufacturer.

Standing near a machine cutting a titanium bracket destined for a regional jet program, Whitfield reflected on the arc from folding table to aerospace supplier. "Milwaukee still knows how to make things precisely," he said. "We just had to prove it to customers who'd never looked here first."
