MSOE Partners with Manufacturers on Robotics Training

Milwaukee School of Engineering has expanded a partnership with a group of regional manufacturers to develop new coursework in industrial robotics and automation, responding to persistent complaints from Wisconsin employers that graduates often lack hands-on experience with the specific equipment used on modern factory floors. The program pairs classroom instruction with time spent on manufacturing partner sites, giving students exposure to real production environments before graduation.

Southeastern Wisconsin has long been home to a dense cluster of manufacturers, from precision machining shops to larger industrial equipment makers, many of which have struggled in recent years to find workers comfortable operating and troubleshooting automated systems. University officials say the new curriculum is a direct response to that gap.

Bridging Classroom and Shop Floor

"You can teach the theory of robotics in a lecture hall, but there's a real difference between simulating a robotic arm on a screen and actually calibrating one that's about to run a production line," said an MSOE engineering faculty member involved in developing the new coursework. "Our manufacturing partners have been clear that they want graduates who can walk in and be productive within weeks, not months."

Under the arrangement, students in relevant engineering and technology programs will have the option to complete rotations at partner facilities, working alongside floor technicians and engineers on live automation projects. Participating companies, several of which are based in the Milwaukee and Waukesha areas, have also agreed to donate or loan equipment to the university's labs, giving students access to the same robotic arms and programmable controllers used in actual production settings.

Addressing a Statewide Skills Gap

Wisconsin manufacturers have reported for years that automation and robotics skills are among the hardest to find in new hires, even as more of the state's smaller machine shops and larger production facilities adopt robotic systems to remain competitive. Industry groups have pointed to an aging manufacturing workforce nearing retirement, compounding the need for new workers trained on current technology rather than equipment that's a generation or two out of date.

"We're not trying to replace people with robots," said a representative from one of the participating manufacturing companies. "We need people who know how to work with robots, program them, and fix them when something goes wrong. That's a very different skill set than what a lot of programs were teaching even five years ago."

Student Experience

Early participants in the pilot phase of the program described the shift from theoretical coursework to hands-on shop time as both challenging and clarifying. "In class, everything works the way the textbook says it will," said a senior mechanical engineering student who completed a rotation at a local manufacturer. "On the floor, you're troubleshooting real problems, and that's where you actually learn."

University administrators say they plan to expand the number of manufacturing partners over the next two years, with an eye toward eventually offering the rotation program to a broader range of engineering disciplines beyond robotics specifically, including electrical and industrial engineering students.

Looking Ahead

MSOE officials say the expanded partnership fits into a broader institutional strategy of tying coursework closely to regional industry needs, a positioning the university has leaned into as a small, technically focused institution competing for students against larger universities. With Wisconsin's manufacturing sector continuing to invest in automation, faculty say demand for graduates with this specific blend of skills is unlikely to slow down anytime soon.
