Surgical teams at Froedtert Hospital have begun using a refined image-guided biopsy technique that surgeons say is yielding more precise tissue samples while requiring smaller incisions than the standard approach used for the past decade. The shift, adopted gradually over the past several months, is already changing recovery timelines for patients undergoing biopsies to investigate suspicious masses found on imaging.

The technique pairs real-time imaging guidance with a narrower instrument profile, allowing surgeons to navigate to a target area with greater precision while minimizing disruption to surrounding tissue. For patients, the practical difference often comes down to a smaller incision, less post-procedure discomfort, and in many cases, a same-day discharge rather than an overnight hospital stay.

Precision Reduces the Need for Repeat Procedures

One of the more frustrating outcomes in diagnostic biopsy work is an inconclusive sample, one that doesn't contain enough of the tissue in question to give pathologists a clear answer, forcing a patient to undergo a second procedure. A surgeon at Froedtert who has adopted the new technique said improved imaging guidance has noticeably reduced how often that happens.

"When you can see exactly where you're sampling in real time, you're simply more likely to get a diagnostic sample on the first attempt," the surgeon said. "That matters enormously to a patient who's already anxious about what a biopsy might show. Nobody wants to go through that waiting period twice."

Reducing repeat procedures also has downstream benefits for hospital scheduling capacity and, from a system-wide perspective, for overall healthcare costs, since each repeat biopsy carries its own set of expenses, from operating room time to additional pathology processing.

Faster Recovery, Less Disruption

Because the technique typically requires a smaller incision than older approaches, many patients report less pain in the days following the procedure and a quicker return to normal activity. A patient care coordinator who works with post-biopsy patients said feedback has been notably positive since the technique was introduced.

"We're hearing from patients that they're back to normal activities within a couple of days rather than a week or more," the coordinator said. "For people juggling work and family responsibilities, that difference is significant."

Training a Broader Surgical Team

Adopting the new technique required dedicated training for the surgical team, including hands-on practice sessions using simulation models before the approach was used on patients. Hospital leaders say the investment in training reflects a broader institutional priority of staying current with advances in minimally invasive diagnostic tools, particularly as more procedures move toward outpatient settings.

A surgical department administrator noted that the technique's adoption also required close coordination with the pathology department, since sample handling protocols needed slight adjustments to accommodate the smaller tissue volumes sometimes obtained through the narrower instrument.

Expanding Access Across Applications

While the technique was initially adopted primarily for breast and soft tissue biopsies, surgeons at Froedtert say they are exploring its use for additional applications, including certain lymph node and thyroid biopsies where precision and minimal tissue disruption are similarly valuable.

Hospital officials describe the shift as part of a broader trend across Wisconsin's academic medical centers toward less invasive diagnostic approaches wherever clinically appropriate, driven both by patient preference and by a growing body of evidence supporting comparable diagnostic accuracy with reduced recovery burden. For patients facing the anxious wait between a suspicious imaging finding and a definitive diagnosis, even modest improvements in speed and comfort can make a meaningful difference.
